Preventative Dentistry

Avoid dental problems from the outset

It is important to care for your teeth to keep them healthy to avoid dental decay and gum disease. Achieving good oral health will also benefit your overall health.

preventative dentistry

The following practices will ensure good oral hygiene and keep the teeth clean, strong and healthy:

  • Regular examination with your dentist to identify any risk factors or cause for concern. We screen for decay, gum disease, oral cancer and TMJ disorders. Digital x-rays will be taken intermittently to diagnose decay and gum disease.
  • Oral cancer screening- this is performed visually by our dentists and hygienists. Risk factors include alcohol and tobacco. Early detection is imperative.
  • Daily flossing, to keep clean the spaces between the teeth.
  • Daily brushing with a fluoride containing toothpaste. For high caries risk patients, professionally applied fluoride containing gels, varnishes, mouth rinses and supplements are recommended.
  • Fissure sealants can be applied to children’s teeth to prevent tooth decay developing in the future. They are usually applied to the groves in the biting surfaces of the posterior molar teeth.

These preventative measures will prevent oral disease such as dental decay and gum disease from occurring in the first place or to effectively treat them in their initial stages before they become more advanced.

Stain Removal

Safe, effective air abrasion cleaning

If your teeth are stained or discoloured for whatever reason we are able to offer a technique to remove such surface stains called air abrasion.

stain removal

Tiny particles are propelled towards the teeth which helps to lift off the surface stains.

If you have any questions regarding air abrasion, please consult with one of our dentists.

Retain a natural appearance

A crown can be made to fit over a prepared tooth in order to strengthen it and to give a natural appearance.

Teeth may require reinforcement either following root canal treatment, following fracture or weakening by a large filling.

There are several types of crowns. Porcelain bonded crowns have a core of metal. Porcelain is bonded over the metal to give a strong, durable and aesthetic result.

It is possible to have a crown that is completely free of metal. Construction of entirely ceramic crowns can involve complex technical processes and such crowns may be more expensive as a result

Dental Bridges

Replace missing teeth and restore your smile

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth. The bridge has 2 or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

These are called abutment teeth, the artificial tooth in between is called a pontic.

There are several types of dental bridges:

  1. Conventional fixed bridges
  2. Cantilever bridges
  3. Resin-bonded bridges

Conventional fixed bridges

These are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. These bridges have abutment teeth either side of the gap and a pontic in between.

Cantilever bridges

These bridges are used when the abutment tooth is only on one side of the gap. The associated pontic can put too much pressure on the abutment tooth at the back of the mouth. Therefore, this type of bridge is not commonly used.

Resin-bonded bridges

These require less preparation of the abutment teeth. They can often be used for anterior teeth. Metal or porcelain wings on each side of the wing are bonded to your existing teeth.

There are some scenarios where a resin bonded bridge is not advisable, namely those that clench or grind their teeth or towards the back of the mouth where there are greater biting forces.

Your dentist can assist you in planning the ideal bridge restoration for you.

What Is Gum Disease?

How we can prevent, identify
and treat gum problems

Gingivitis occurs when the gums become inflamed, largely due to bacteria in plaque that may build up on the teeth due to poor tooth brushing.

gum disease

You may notice that the gums will easily bleed during brushing. This is a warning sign! If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop on to periodontitis commonly known as gum disease. This is when small pockets develop between the gum and the bone, due to physiological tissue damage. If left untreated, the pockets will deepen causing the teeth to become loose.

The damage caused as a result of periodontitis/gum disease is irreversible bone loss and hence tooth loss occurs. The principal cause of tooth loss in the adult population is gum disease.

Not all gingivitis will progress on to gum disease, if treated in the correct way. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain excellent oral hygiene both at home and by regular visits to a hygienist.

Contact the practice to book in with one of our hygienists. They will be happy to treat the gum disease by professionally cleaning your teeth and also to instruct you on prevention of gum disease through correct home care.

Children’s Dentistry

Give them a good head start!

Here at Townley Dental we advise to bring children in from the age of 2 or 3 years of age. This will allow them to gradually get used to the surroundings and the dental chair.

children's dentistry

We would hope that eventually we could build in a dental routine that would grow with them. How your child begins their dental journey will impact on their future approach to the care and maintenance of their teeth.

Give your children a good head start and book them in with one of our child-friendly dentists today!

Top tips for children for nice healthy teeth:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for 2 minutes at a time with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • 6 months- 2 years- Use 500-1000ppm fluoride toothpaste twice a day depending on caries risk.
  • 2-6 years- Use 500-1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste twice a day depending on caries risk.
  • 6 years and above- Use 1450 ppm (adult) fluoride toothpaste twice a day.
  • Change your toothbrush regularly.
  • Try to eats lots of fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water.
  • Try to avoid fizzy drinks and too many sugary foods such as sweets, chocolate and biscuits, to protect against tooth decay.
  • Visit your dentist every 6 months.

How to brush your teeth:

  • Use only a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Until children are able to sufficiently brush their teeth alone, parents are encouraged to help their child to brush twice a day.
  • Clean each tooth with a gentle circular motion.
  • Make sure that the entire surface of each tooth is cleaned up to the gum line.
  • Pay particular attention to the back teeth as these may collect more plaque.
  • Flossing is encouraged from teenage years onwards. Children that play contact sports should wear a mouth guard in order to protect their teeth.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

There are a number of reasons why wisdom teeth may require removal:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Recurrent infections
  • Tooth decay
  • Food trapping due to angulation or impaction
  • Overcrowding
  • Abscess or cyst formation
wisdom teeth removal

If you are suffering from severe pain or discomfort with your wisdom teeth then you should consult with one of our dentists who will advise whether removal of the wisdom teeth is necessary.

It is possible to have the wisdom teeth extracted at the practice either using local anesthetic or IV sedation.

More complex extractions could require treatment in hospital with a specially trained surgeon.

Jaw Pain & TMJ Disorder

Do you suffer with Jaw Pain?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a sliding hinge that connects the jaw to the skull. Certain disorders can cause pain of the TMJ and affect the muscles that control jaw movements.

tmj jaw pain

Such TMJ disorders can be due to trauma or arthritis but often the cause is unknown. Treatment for TMJ disorders is through non-surgical treatments such as jaw exercises, medication or provision of a bite guard.

Surgical intervention may be required for more severe TMJ disorders. A common consequence of such TMJ disorders can be clenching or grinding of the teeth. A clicking sound can also be heard when you open your mouth.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms, discuss your options with one of the dentists here at Townley Dental.

Replacement of Partial
or Completely Missing Teeth

A denture is a removable appliance that replaces missing teeth.

There are 2 types available:

  • Complete dentures, when all teeth are missing
  • Partial dentures, used when some natural teeth still remain

Dentures restore the smile and improve appearance. Dentures fill out the appearance of the face and profile.

Dentures also help to eat comfortably and speak better than you could without teeth.
It is possible to match the natural teeth so that there is not much change in appearance, if that is what you wish. Alternatively, the dentures can improve the appearance of your smile to give increased confidence and esteem.

Complete Dentures

These can either be “conventional” or “immediate”. Conventional dentures are full removable dentures that are fitted months after the remaining teeth were removed and the tissues have healed.

Immediate dentures are fitted the same day as the remaining teeth are removed. As a result of bone and gum shrinkage following tooth removal you may require the denture to be relined or remade after the jaw has healed.

Partial Dentures

A removable partial denture is often used when one or more natural teeth remain. The replacement teeth may either be attached to a gum coloured acrylic base or a metal framework.

Metal dentures can be smaller than acrylic dentures and do not fully cover the roof of the mouth. They are also less likely to bend or break due to the durability of the metal.

There are also partial and conventional dentures that can be made of a flexible acrylic material. The flexibility of these aid comfortable wear by reducing the discomfort and pressure points that other non-flexible dentures may cause.

The translucent pink appearance of these flexi dentures increase the aesthetics and hence give a natural appearance far superior to any metal or standard acrylic denture.

Here at Townley Dental, your dentist will be able to guide you through the transition to dentures and discuss the best options for you.

Sedation / Sleep Dentistry

A Calm and Relaxing Environment
for Nervous Patients

It is possible to use sedation techniques to provide a calm, relaxing and stress free environment for certain patients to receive their dental care.

sedative dentistry

For those people that are very phobic about going to the dentist, to those that are anxious about more invasive procedures, sedation can eliminate their anxiety.

Medication is used to help patients to relax during dental treatments. Here at Townley Dental we are delighted to offer oral sedation and intravenous IV sedation techniques.

Oral sedation can be used when the level of sedation required is minimal sedation. A tablet is administered usually an hour prior to the treatment. The tablet will make you feel drowsy although you remain awake. A larger dose can be given to produce moderate sedation.

IV sedation involves administration of the sedative drug through a vein. As a result the dentist can continually adjust and monitor the level of sedation.

Here at Townley Dental our specially trained dentist can administer both levels of sedation to both adults and children if necessary.

Custom Fitted Mouthguards

Do you play contact sports
or ball games?

Custom-made mouthguards are by far the safest way of protecting your mouth, teeth and gums because they are made by making an accurate impression of your teeth.

custom fitted mouthguards
They fit perfectly over your teeth, providing the most comfortable and safest fit.

They are a lot less costly than the costs associated with replacing teeth or treatments for damaged teeth. Specially made mouthguards can also prevent damage to the face and can even protect against jaw, face and brain injury. Home kits are available, but these are not as safe and are not recommended.

Townley Dental offer a range of fitted mouthguards, ideal for contact sports. Get in touch to book a fitting.

Mouth Cancer Screening

Early Detection and
Prevention are Key

Whether you have concerns or you simply want to have regular screening, we are able to help.

mouth cancer screening

Oral cancer is a malignant cancerous growth that can affect all parts of the mouth including the gums, tongue, lips and throat. If undetected, cancer can be fatal. Examinations by a qualified dentist can allow early detection of signs of oral cancer.

Prevention is the best method, and cancer that is detected early can be treated more quickly with a higher chance of survival. Oral examinations are the best way to detect mouth cancer early, and at Townley Dental our dentists use a range of methods to check for oral cancer.

It is important to note however that signs of oral cancer may not always be visible during an oral examination. If however any abnormalities are visible, your dentist may refer you for mouth screening at the hospital.

Smokers, those who drink more than the recommended levels of alcohol and previous oral cancer patients are at higher risk of having mouth cancer and so should ensure that they seek more regular screening. Please call us on 0208 693 4974 to book in a mouth cancer screening exam with our dentists.

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Do you have painful
or inflamed teeth?

Thanks to modern technology, we are able to save teeth that have had the pulp spoiled through disease or injury, by way of root canal treatment.

root canal treatment
The pulp of the tooth is the central part of the tooth that runs from the crown to the root tip, and it contains blood vessels, nerves and tissue.

Problems with the pulp of the tooth can often arise from cracks in the tooth or a deep cavity and this can become infected, causing severe pain, inflammation and swelling if not treated and sometimes leading to an abscess which is a small pocket filled with pus often forming under the tooth.

If this is not treated the entire tooth would need to be extracted. Root canal treatment is the most effective and commonly used treatment for this kind of problem.

Access into the tooth is gained through the crown and into the pulp and the root canal is then cleaned out, enlarged and formed to a shape that can easily be filled. The tooth is then restored with a filing material and often a crown is added to prevent cracks to the tooth later on.

An anaesthetic is used to avoid discomfort and pain during the root canal treatment.

White “Composite” Fillings

We all do our best to avoid fillings, but we may need one at some point in our lives

Whilst some people are happy with silver amalgam fillings in their back teeth, others are not. They may feel that when they laugh or smile the silver fillings are visible.

white fillings
White fillings can give the natural look that many people want. The cost of white fillings can depend on the size and type of white fillings used in addition to the time taken to place the filling.

The heaviness of your bite and the position of the filling in the mouth can determine how long a white filling lasts.

Composite fillings are strong, but commonly may not be as hardwearing as amalgam fillings.
Porcelain can be long lasting and hard wearing, therefore it is possible to restore teeth with porcelain inlays and onlays, which can be colour matched to your own teeth.

Commonly two visits are required as a porcelain inlay/onlay needs to be constructed in a laboratory.

Do you dream of having the perfect smile, just like your favourite celebrities?

Veneers are a relatively conservative treatment option to close small gaps, or improve the colour, shape and appearance of your teeth.

A thin layer of either composite or porcelain can be constructed to be placed over the front of a tooth.

Some types of veneer do not require any preparation at all.

Porcelain Onlays/ Inlays

Repair damaged teeth and prevent further damage

When a tooth is so broken down that a filling will not suffice, a porcelain onlay will cover most if not all the chewing surface of the tooth to prevent further fracture and reinforce it.

inlays and onlays
An onlay does not cover the entire tooth as a crown does. Therefore it is more conservative as more of the tooth’s own structure is left intact.

This, together with the onlay being constructed completely from porcelain, gives a very aesthetic and natural appearance.
The difference between a porcelain inlay and onlay is how much tooth structure remains intact following fracture, wear or tooth decay.

An inlay is used where there is more tooth structure remaining and its limits are within the cusps of the teeth. An onlay is used where the damage is more extensive and it is necessary to cover one or more of the cusps of the tooth.

Here at Townley Dental, your dentist will be able to guide you to decide which of the options are most suitable for you.

Missing Teeth

Your Options for the Replacement of Missing Teeth

There are a few reasons why it is wise to replace missing teeth. A gap in the mouth can affect the teeth either side of a gap.

missing teeth
The teeth can tilt towards the gap causing a food trap which will lead to gum disease and decay. Replacement of teeth in a gap will no doubt improve the appearance.

Factors such as number of teeth missing and location and integrity of the remaining teeth will determine how to replace the missing teeth.

It is possible to replace numerous teeth with a removable appliance; a partial denture, or a complete denture if all the teeth are missing.

A bridge can be used where there are fewer teeth to replace or the missing teeth are located on one side of the mouth.

A dental implant can be used to replace single or more teeth.

Gum Contouring

Improve your smile and your gum health

This is a process that involves reshaping the gum (gingival) tissue around a tooth. Contouring can be used for cosmetic and oral health reasons such as poor oral hygiene.

gum contouring
Often gingival contouring is required as part of periodontal procedures such as crown lengthening, pocket reduction and regenerative procedures.

Cosmetic gingival contouring can correct:

  • Gummy smiles (excessive gingival display)
  • Asymmetric gingival contours
  • Loss of papillae
  • Exposed root surfaces

Missing Teeth?

Dental Implants could be the solution.

Whether the cause of tooth loss is gum disease, trauma or decay an implant provides the best long-term solution. You will be left with the appearance and feel of natural teeth, allowing you to eat and speak as normal.

straumann dental implants
A dental implant involves a titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw to replace the root portion of a natural missing tooth.

Following 3-6 months the implant is integrated into the bone. A crown can be attached to the implant, to give the appearance of a natural looking tooth.

It is possible to use dental implants to aid in the support of bridges and dentures.

We fit Straumann Dental Implantslogo_straumann_small

Straumann provide solutions for a range of dental conditions, from the replacement of individual missing teeth all the way to full arch restorations. They are the leading global supplier in dental implantology and oral tissue regeneration.

Bone Grafting

To secure and repair

Bone loss from extraction or loss of teeth may leave the jaw bone deficient in bone to secure a dental implant. A bone graft will create a solid base for an implant.

dental bone grafting
A piece of bone is used from the back of the jaw or from the chin region and transplanted to the jaw bone area where the deficiency is.

It could take between 6-9 months for the transplanted bone to grow enough new bone to support a dental implant. In some cases only a minor bone graft is required at the time of implant placement. The dentist will decide if a bone graft is required.

Socket Preservation

To preserve and maintain

Sometimes it may be necessary to delay placement of an implant. In such scenarios it may be advised to preserve the socket with artificial bone material in order to aid placement of a dental implant at a later stage.

socket preservation
Socket preservation helps to maintain the bone volume and quality which are vital in the success of any dental implant.

This painless procedure will facilitate the provision of an implant at the site following tooth removal.
Socket preservation is part of a well planned implant treatment which helps to prevent bone loss and avoids more extensive procedures when placing implants.

Socket preservation can be less costly than some bone grafting techniques.

Our implantologist can advise you during consultation what the best approach to dental implants is for you.

Sinus Grafting

To support dental implants

It is possible to increase the height of bone available in the upper jaw above the posterior teeth by creating new bone in the sinus.

This is called Sinus Grafting.

sinus grafting
A sinus lift is a procedure that is used to raise the sinus lining so there is sufficient space to augment additional bone to support the implants.
